The dreaded "B" word....

I decided it was time to put some time into Herb Window Garden. I haven't touched it in 3 years....why you ask??? One word--Backstitch!!! That's been all that's left on this sampler since 2009 and once upon a time I didn't mind backstitch....but after discovering designs that look gorgeous without all the tedious backstitching I grew to avoid designs with backstitch--HOWEVER, I still love this design and I still want to hang it in my kitchen so my plan is to devote some time to it this week and hopefully make a big dent in all the backstitching. You can see where I stopped in 2009 here.

and this is what I accomplished so far today :) Not bad huh??

I have this one in my to-do mountain....haven't had a chance to start it yet. When I do stitch it, can I send it to you for backstitching?

Hi Becky!
I have the pattern of this sampler as well. I haven't actually started to stitch it yet. It's so nice to see your progress! I hate back stitching too--and try very hard to avoid it. I don't mind if there is a small amount but if it comprises the whole design I keep away.

Looking good! I can't wait to see it completed!

Brightest Blessings!

This is a beautiful design. It looks so wonderful that hopefully the pain of the back stitching will fade. Hope your hubby is getting better each day.

Isn't it strange the things that keep us from finishing things. Sometimes I feel I have a disorder that makes me afraid to finish things for fear they won't be right. Good luck with the backstitching. I'm a serial starter,LOL!

Gorgeous, love this design! Can't wait to see the final picture!

Everytime you do an update on this piece I promise myself to find the pattern, and tonight I purchased from ebay. I just love the blue and white theme.

Even though I'm with you and HATE backstitching, it does bring a design to life! I'm so proud that you've taken on the challenge! It looks beautiful!

What a gorgeous design! I'm sure the final result will make all the back stitching worth the hassle.

Hope your hubby's doing better every day.

It looks so good! I love white and blue color combination. Good luck with backstitching ;-))

Well, I am catching up my reading today, as I have had some back issues myself. Sure hope your hubby is improving each day! And good luck on that backstitching! It sure does get tedious!

That is a very nice design. I know what you mean about backstitching. I try to avoid is too.

It's a really lovely design, I'm glad you're giving it some love again. I feel your pain with the backstitch, I'm working on a piece with a roller coaster... all backstitch. :) Good luck slogging through it all!

Beautiful design, it will look lovely in your kitchen.
I am so with you on back stitching, I HATE it too!!!, but in the end it really does make the finished piece look wonderful. Good luck with the stitching, I'm sure it won't take you too long and the finished piece will be in your kitchen in no time!!!
I too, hope your husband is continuing to feel better each day.
Love to you both

It's a beautiful design and the back stitching really makes it pop, but I can completely relate to your story of avoiding designs with backstitching once you discovered nice designs without it. Backstitching is one of my least favorite things to do. However, this is going to be stunning when you are finished.

I hate backstitch too. Avoid it at all costs nowadays. Lovely stitching.

Hi Becky,
What a lovely design! This will be great in your kitchen! How are you going to finish it? A "quilty" wallhanging, framed, ...?
Have a nice day!

Gorgeous! That certainly is a lot of backstiching... but, so worth it! Maybe I'll add this one to my to-do list too! ;-)

Hi Becky:
It's beautiful! Backstitching is so time consuming but really makes it pop! I recently pulled out the Three Wiseman from an old issue of Treasures magazine that I had finished except the backstitching! I am happy to hear your husband is home and doing well. take good care, Wanda

I don't hate backstitching. Sometimes, I will batchstitch as I go and that seems to cut down on the tediousness of it all.

Hi Becky! I am still praying for your husband. :)
What a pretty design. It will feel so great to get it done! http://astitchersstory.blogspot.com/

Its a lovely design Becky. I have backstitch and tend to cheat going over more squares each time to speed it up! xx

Becky
This piece is definitely worth the backstitching effort! The vases sport that perfect blue and white combination.
Hope Rick is starting to feel stronger.

Beautiful piece Becky and it will be so worth it when it's hanging in your kitchen. I hate backstitch too so I can understand why you've put it off.

HUGS to you my friend. Hope your husband is feeling better:)

It's a lovely design...hope it doesn't take too long to complete the backstitch so you can have it displayed on your kitchen soon =)

I am so glad you have decided to pick this one back up :) I bought this design after seeing yours way back then, I still have yet to start it but hopefully now I can get it together LOL

Hope you are having a lovely day. Give your DH a Hello hope he is doing well.

Think of backstitching as a not thinking time where you can just sit and chat or watch TV.

Your Patriotic Tree is lovely great designs.

Glad to hear that your Husband is coming along - pain is just not a fun thing to go through!!

Have a wonderful week.

Your piece looks great Becky. I know what you mean about the backstitching. That is a bad word! LOL But sometimes if you just start it, then it goes better than you thought. I really love the blues in your piece.

Mindi said...

I don't blame you for disliking backstitching, but this project looks like its worth it!

Rita said...

What a beautiful project.

You know, I always dread backstitching but often when I get around to tackling it, wonder why I dreaded it so much.

I'm thinking maybe we feel like we should be done after all that cross stitching.

Sarah said...

This piece looks beautiful, I'm sure all the backstitching will be worth it in the end!

It seems to be an epidemic--those who avoid backstitching! I am one, too... tho if I REALLY like the design, I will tolerate it now! Getting soft in my years. Ha! Still praying for a good recovery for hubby, too! Hugs!

Judy said...

The project is beautiful! Oh, the lost hours spent backstitching! It will be gorgeous when completed. Love the BB stocking..it is next in my pile! Hope the hubby is recovering quickly.

I agree with you 100% on the backstitching. I had forgotten how tedious it is until I did a small piece for my mother-in-law recently. One backstitch at a time . . .

Bekca said...

I don't mind backstitching too much, but I couldn't do it on every design I stitch. This piece is looking gorgeous Becky, you'll have it done in no time!
Best wishes.

That will look lovely when finished. Good luck with all that backstitching!

Backstitch or not it is a beautiful design and you did a great job on it. Just put it by your chair and pick it up in those dead moments and the backstitch will get done. Wonderful

Karoline said...

Nice to see this one again Becky. I hope your DH continues to make a good recovery

Jannie said...

Gosh Becky - I don't know that it needs backstitching! It is beautiful. I think I want to do that one. Wow! Looks great as is. Hope Hubby is doing well.

Susan said...

I've always loved this piece, Becky, but I understand about putting it down because of the backstitching - I'm not a fan, either! If you work on it at a little at a time, in between doing other pieces, I think it will be done much faster than you think!

Good luck!

Daffycat said...

Very, very pretty. While time-consuming, backstitch does add life to some designs. Good for you getting it completed!

Lynn said...

This is such a gorgeous design but I understand your reticence with BS. I'm not a big fan of it either and tend to avoid it like the plague! Like you, I now avoid designs that have any BS in them.
